URGENT: Shark's skin coming off/infected?? Help please!

Okay, something I thought of after looking through you pics again. Vader mentioned your shark must have a strong will to live, and I agree- there is no sign of infection after 7 days in the wounds and your substrate (gravel) is sparse and actually large pebbles, so I bet its a VERY clean environment, which has helped keep him alive this long. Judging by your pics you could keep the shark in his current tank & just start the 75-80% waterchanges DAILY (repeat: DAILY). Put the cichlids in the 20 gallon.

Wow, those are some serious wounds. To be perfectly honest with you, I wouldn't invest too much money in trying to save this fish. I highly doubt he will live another 3-4 days. I would euthanize him ASAP....but that's ultimately your decision. Good luck with whatever you decide to do.

DO NOT, I REPEAT DO NOT EUTHANIZE THIS FISH. You will be AMAZED at how quickly they can heal. There is no infection, no bleeding, and he has made it this long- he has the will to live, give him the CHANCE!

I'm going to say it one more time.

This user strongly suggests:

No salt

No meds of any kind (at this time)

I SECOND THIS. NO SALY, NO MEDS. (unless signs of infection occur in the future.)

After one week there is no reason to euthanize. Give him a chance but it will take work on your part. DAILY WATER CHANGES.

Agree with Viva.... leave the other fish and the injured fish in the large tank. Do daily water changes to 75%. Temp matched and water conditioned.

Put the cichlid that is causing this nightmare in the 20 gallon. He needs a bigger tank, but it will do for now. You need a bigger tank, a new filter, it needs a heater on the 20 gallon, and because you don't have a cycled filter on the 20 gallon you need to perform daily water changes on the 20 gallon as well. Otherwise, you'll risk losing this cihclid as well.

Holy smokes...

DrVader- Advice taken, this fish has survived many near-death encounters (one invloving the bath tub itself and a shower hose)...

VivaLaVics- I WILL NOT EUTHANIZE IT...No meds and no salt...I'm planning on moving the cichlid to the 20 gallons and instead leaving the small and big shark to the big tank...Should I remove substrate? ...

Okay, Hospital Tank instructions, as requested!!!

1: If you have a filter for the hospital tank you need to add bio media from the original tank to the new one. (You can either cut a piece of the sponge original sponge and put it in the new one or if you use a canister you can take some of the little bio wheels and put them in the new filter.)

2: You need to gather some of the rocks (I would say Softball size amount) and put them in a mesh bag. If you dont have a mesh bag you can use the foot from pantyhose or a thin dress sock. Tie a knot at the end so they dont fall out. Place the bag of rocks directly in the tank.

3: Take water from the ORIGINAL tank and put it in the Hospital tank. (Fill the new tank 50-60% with the water your shark is currently in)

4: Dechlorinate fresh water and add it to the new tank.

5: Set the heater at 75 degrees and place your shark in the tank with as little stress imposed upon him as possible. (would be best to set the tanks up close to one another so he doesnt have to make a long trip from room to room.)

6: Leave him alone. I would fast him (dont feed him) for 12 hours.

7: Tomorrow afternoon, feed him, let him eat as much as he will, and update us on how he is eating- this is a something we need to know in order to help you as the healing process goes on.

8: After feeding, change 70-80% of his water, again, dechorinating the new water being added. Repeat this priocesses DAILY.

9: Pay attention to his waste. If his poo seems white or stringly, let us know. You may also want to vary his diet as allowed, feed him veggies, and minimize protines. Viatmines are just as good for fish as they are for us.

After reading Varders input- I agree.

Move the shark to the hospital. The cichlids dont need to be put in danger by being moved to a non-cycled tank. THe shark will be OK in there, as I said earlier, because you will be doing daily waterchanges to keep the levels stable.

:thm:

Typicaly, I do not advocate moving any of the old tank water (does not help a new cycle at ALL) but in this case, I think it is prudent to help avoid any stress.

Broken record: Daily 75% water changes... temp matched and water conditioned ...

Okay, thanks for those, I'll follow them shortly. About the no meds- the wound has kept spreading, from a dot to a full blown scar, so why no meds?

VivaLaVics and DrVader really jumped into action with this one, good job you two.

and best of luck to you Danomind, this is quite a predicament, but if everything works out, you'll look back one day and be proud of yourself.
