My used stand was not homemade but was bought. My 33 long fits on it exactly. However there is no top to it the tank is only supported around the exterior edges. Am i correct in assuming i should be looking for some sort of table type top for this to help support the weight? Im sure im asking a really stupid question but what the hell.:D

first of all, if the stand is made of that pressed board crap (not actual wood), toss it. if its gotten wet even once, its a collapse waiting to happen.

and to answer your question, you can probably get a sheet of plywood to put down if you want to, but as long as there are braces across where the tank will sit, you should be ok

You don't need a top for it. If you look at the bottom of your tank, you will see that the tank frame supports all the weight. The frame rests on the stand, not the bottom of the tank, so no need for a top.

^ Yep, the only thing that supports most tanks are the rims on the bottom. That is unless you have a rimless tank.

If the tank has a frame, you can look at the bottom and see that only the frame touches the surface it sets on, therefore you dont need a solid surface.

(the glass bottom doesn't touch the stand)

That stand is fine for a glass tank but if it's an acrylic tank it MUST be supported from the whole bottom not just the edges.
