I have a 5 gallon tank that is set up with a sponge filter in the corner. I'm going to be moving it to a room that for whatever reason gets colder than most of the other rooms in the house, so I want to put in a heater in there. My question is, would a heater (a marineland stealth heater, to be specific) function properly with the minimal amount of circulation that a sponge filter provides? Could it start to malfunction or suffer damage from water stagnation or minimal flow?

a properly set up tank with sponge filters will function fine with a heater.. tho I should tell you marineland stealth heaters were recalled.
make sure to get the proper heater designed for the size tank you are using.

There is always that chance, but a good quality heater should be fine if placed close to the filter to take advantage of the low flow.
