So how exactly does this work? When I change my water (using 5 gal buckets) I dechlorinate (prime) the water before putting it in the tank. What do you do when you use a python? Obviously dechlorinate it afterwards but do you have to do it for the whole tank volume or can you do it for the volume added?

You should dose for the whole tank volume.

Treating the whole tank.then adding water wouldnt do anything.. Its supposed to work in seconds so treating already treated water then adding new, untreated water seemz like its a waste and would leave untreated water in my tank

I shut off my heater and filter and do whatever trimming I need to for about 15 minutes before I start draining (so the heater can cool off, as it is positioned vertically) then throw the Python in, drain about 50% of the water, then start filling. As it's filling I dump in about 4-5 ml of dechlor (I do not use Prime, as it is expensive, and I have no use for any of it's additional abilities in my tank). I can't remember the brand I use, either API or Top Fin, the biggest bottle I could find at Petsmart. It was about $6 and comes with a little cup built onto the top of the bottle cap.

i promise you prime is so much cheaper. i have used stress coat and it lasts me a week while prime lasts a month or more.
