most people thinks carbon are the best stuffs out there, but i dont think. its not really needed like lr. as long as you have good amount of lr and ls, your good to go. w.c is your main filter.

i am no expert but i would think you want at least some kind of mechanical filtration.. some way to run your water through some filter floss.. I don't use carbon or any kind of chemical filtration but I would think that mechanical and biological (your LR) filtration are required.
I have a 40g with 40lbs LR and a AQ 70 HOB filled with Live rock rubble nothing else. Sometimes I put a carbon bag in to clear up the water but not often as of lately. The water seems to not get cloudy anymore. Hope this helps.
I just bought the AQ 50 today and I'm using the foam pad and the carbon. Should I use the bio max too or can I add live rock on top instead?
