using carbon for ben. bacteria?

Hi,
I have 2, 55 gal. tanks with sand as a subtrate. I have Carbon in my filter that I put in there trying to clear things up after I switched over to sand and I am wondering... Is there a benefit if I just leave the carbon in the filter? I dont really need the carbon anymore to get that crystal clear water, but my thinking is that is would be a good place for beneficial bacteria to grow since I dont have any real gravel in the tank. What are your opinions on this?

Just put another sponge in the space the carbon is taking and it will provide more space for bacteria and easier to rinse out than a bag of carbon.

Thanks, that sounds good. I have a Penguin Bio-wheel 350. It did not come with sponges so I am not familiar with those. I know I can put one or two in the extra compartments in the filter. What kind of sponges would be good for bacteria growth? or does it not matter as long as its a sponge? I'll probably pick some up tomorrow.

Just make sure there aren't any weird chemicals that come with the spong (soaps, cleaners, perfumes, etc.) and you'll be fine. Filter floss or a guaze type materil would be good alternatives as well.
