using crushed coral to raise pH...

a teaspoon of baking soda ups your ph no clue if its healthy but i've done it and my fish are fine

From what I have understood, you can use a good bit of the stuff because it tends to only leach into the column once the KH goes down to a certain level.

I use it in the canister filter of my mbuna tank. Probably about a cup or so and I treat it as both chemical and biological - that is, it is the last layer of media, and I replace a little less than half of it every few months.

I also use baking soda in small amounts with the new water I add at changes since my tap water is basically neutral and medium soft. I do that of course so that the fish don't experience any sudden swings.

Thus I guess I can't speak much for the crushed coral effects over time, as I use it more as a stabilizer/preventative with the added benefit of biological activity. But yes....the stuff is good. Especially the Carib Sea Florida type.

I just picked up a bag of it today to add to my tanks because my KH is so low, and wouldn't be a problem but it is so low that on 4 days without a water change my PH crashed. So when you figure out how much it takes in your filter to just up it a little bit, let me know!

Or is there a set number that the coral will raise it to- does that make sense?
My ph is naturally 7.4 which I don't really want to mess with- I just want my KH up.

hmm i dont think ti would raise it much above 7.4

but i'll let you know how the teaspoon worked, im gonna test it when i get home from work and it will have had 24 hours to rest.
