Anyone have a de-humidifier in their basement & it is practically on all the time in the summer & collects/fills up with water so fast? anyone ever use the water for their tanks? any issues one can see? I figured it's all pure & doesn't need to be treated.

The only potential issue is what are the coils that the water condenses on made of? Whatever metal that they're made out of could end up in the water, unless they're titanium, which I wouldn't expect to be the case. More likely they're copper or aluminum. The amount of copper won't matter for fish as I set up a fish room for a local Discus breeder and to reduce the humidity and evaporation losses I routed the condensate back into his sump. No issues in the 3+ yrs it's been up. Inverts could be another case entirely.

good point - not as pure as I thought. not sure if mine is copper or aluminum. but if one does w/c's that would help? I was just thinking why waste all that water accumulated when I do w/c. thx

I use a dehumidifier for my bedroom because of the high humidity year round here. The issue I would have with using it is that the water isn't actually pure. As it condenses it collects dust and other particles (like mold spores and pollen). I don't know what your dehumidifier is like, but mine has a small carbon screen that the air goes through to remove odor, that thing gets filthy, and you know it doesn't catch everything.

I would be very careful about using dehumidifier water, and like subrosa said, if it uses copper condensing coils then you should be careful if you have any loaches or other copper sensitive fishies...

another good point. yes, the screen filter does gets dirty. don't have any loaches or copper sensitive fish. I do have discus, angels, plecos & albino cory's.

thx

I wouldn't.. ever hear of legionnaires disease.

basically the pool of water that collect there is capable of housing some pretty nasty bacteria.

Generally it's not really a good idea to use dehumidifier water in your tanks. Dehumidifing water is kind of the exact opposite as distilling water. When you distill water, all the nasty stuff that's in water is removed. When you dehumidify the air, all the nasty stuff that's in the air is then concentrated in that pool of water. It's not necessarily that bad, but combine it with what Star_Rider said as well as the coil issue and it's just better not to use it.

Not sure about y'all, but I've certainly seen some stuff growing in my dehumidifier basin that I'd rather not dump in with my Chocolate Gouramis.

they have a huge one in daves fish and it still feels like 100% humidity in there.
