using multivitamins meant for humans

Sera Activant is no longer available much nowadays. I used to have packs of them before. Be careful with what you buy. They may be tampered with or already expired. I use Centrum for my goldfish's gel food recipes when I have them, sometime none.

Usually, vitamins are much more effectively used when ingested, Jeff. Light and too much oxygen saturation can degrade and destroy vitamins. It's often an ineffective method.

i am very new to fish keeping so i can't tell you about using vitamins with them, but i do know a bit about vitamins. Centrum is one of the worst vitamins on the market (yes i realize this won't be a popular statement as a lot of people use them). they are so processed and compressed that your body can barely digest the coating let alone the vitamin itself. to put it into perspective, *WARNING THIS IS REALLY GROSS* in trailer parks they actually had to put specific screens on the hoses for pumping out port-a-potties because the hard vitamins would clog the system. and when the rinsed off the vitamin you could still read the "Centrum" on the side.

so although i'm not recommending that you go out and spend $50 on a multi for your fish, if it were me i would simply buy a decent one for myself (it doesn't have to break your bank account) and use a couple from it for the fish. i'm sure the ones specifically for fish are better , but if they are anything like vitamins, etc for dogs they are overpriced and the same thing you get with human vitamins (or of lesser quality).

(BTW i own and run a health food store)

I had always heard it recommended to use liquid baby vitamins to add to fish foods, not adult vitamins.

Chee- the company I work for supplies a lot of the vitamin ingredients to Wyeth Labs for their Centrum. We are a huge, global company that also supplies custom premixed vitamins and minerals that go into many of the fortified foods you eat regulary not only from major manufacturers but from house brands too. Products like juices, sodas, cereals, soups, butter, baked goods, chicken, beef, eggs, milk, energy bars, protein bars, lots of stuff. We pride ourselves on supplying the customers with top quality vitamin ingredients, certainly not the cheapest, but the best quality available. I cannot comment on the how Wyeth actually makes the tablets or what kind of coating goes on them or how they formulate the final product, but I can vouch for the quality of what was premixed to go in to the tablet. And since Wyeth gets quality ingredients for their products, it doesn't really seem accurate that they would ruin the efficacy of their products in the manufacturing process. Don't believe everything you hear or read.:)

I buy the cheapest human vitamins on the market, basically anything on sale at Walmart, Because while the potency may very its really the consistency in taking them that counts.

As for fish it only takes a few drops of liquid vitamins in the prepared frozen fish food like worms and it goes a long way. I only give it to my fish twice a week and the bottle (4oz/$6) has lasted me months and I notice a big difference. Point is this stuff is not that expensive and very easy and ready to use, just keep it in the fridge.

this is why i seldom post things about health products, especially cheap ones, because i am always afraid of offending. i respectfully stand by my original statement and will leave this thread:nilly: before i push it off topic.

I use generic Centrum crushed with a motar & pestle for homemade fish food. If my hands are even damp the outer coating starts to dissolve, I'm not too worried.
