Using polyfiber as filter media

I use the kind that is fire retardant. I asked the manufacturer about its construct and why. They said they don't recommend it for aquarium use because it is made with iron to make it fire-retardant. My water is very much iron poor so a bit of iron, IF it leaches, won't hurt my systems!

What about the poly fibrefill that says something to the effect of mold or mildew resistant on it? I am having a hard time finding the non flame retardant kind, but when I do, it says mold resistant, or something along those lines. I hate to try it and have all my fish croak on me. Would the fire retardant stuff be ok to use as a last ditch effort?

I couldn't find it at walmart

It is in the sewing section of many Walmarts. There is also a "Green" or "Ecology safe" (I think that is what they call it) version. You can also find it at most sewing or craft stores, but Wally has it the cheapest and the LFS is the most expensive.

Our LFS charge $12.99 for a 10oz bag and I get the Wally version for about $3 for a 16oz bag, and $4 - $5 at JoAnn Fabrics.

I would not use a mold/mildew resistant type.

Did anyone every make a conclusion on the use on Buffalo Snow. Bought a big bag at WalSmart clearance for $0.75 and its like a batten only much thinner and also pulls apart like wool. Thought it might work in special applications, anyone ever try this stuff?

Not yet, but I too bought 4 bags of it due to being on sale. I paid $1.75 a bag at JoAnn Fabrics. I will be trying it out soon enough. Someone once told me they used it and without any problems. It worked as well as or better than bulk poly-fiber for their needs
