"May be added to aquarium directly, but better if added to new water first." If it is added directly to the aquarium some of the prime is used up by the ammonia that is already in there.
 
If your addding water directly to the aquarium (with a python, for example), you treat for the volume of the aquarium, not the volume of the water you are adding. However, if your adding it bucket by bucket, then you can just treat for the amount that is in the bucket before adding it to the tank.

I think you both got it a bit wrong.
 
And how did I get it wrong, specifically?
 
I just read something interesting. Apparently Seachem advises to add a dose for the tank size because they assume that you will add it after you have filled back up the aquarium and therefore the ammonia will be dispersed through the entire tank. Seachem believes that adding more should not cause harm and will therefore be able work more efficiently this way. However if you add it before you add the water I see no reason to add extra as they will both be dispersed evenly throughout the aquarium.
 
Don't over think it, just either treat the entire tank or give each bucket a quick drop or two with a pipette/eyedropper/syringe or right out of the bottle.
Hard to overdose, easy to underdose, particularly if your municpality uses chloramines.
 
I agree with chili I dont think it has to be that diffulcult. The tanks I use my python on I treat the tank for the whole volume. the tanks I have that are smaller that I use a bucket on (my 5 and 10g) I just spill a small amount back in to the bucket and then fill the tank back up. Like stated above its easier to underdose. Like I said I just use a small splash to my 5 gallon bucket and have never had any problems.
 
LOL and sigh. Iamsquatty if you go to a local pharmacy and ask at the prescription window they usually give away droppers used for dosing infant medicines. They come in various sizes, but I have one from Longs that is a 5ml capacity marked in 1/2ml increments. Now Prime is dosed at .1ml per gallon so you'd only need .2ml per bucket. Basically speaking I would think something like .5ml won't hurt. You can also use a 1/4 teaspoon measuring spoon and just fill to about half. It isn't easy, but I have done that with other chems.
