also if you go with sand, heavily planted and the addition of malaysian trumpet snails will help to keep the sand "mixed" or stirred to avoid any gas pockets. On top of that you can also add california blackworms to aid in not only the stirring process but will add a live food source for your fish to hunt (blackworms burrow in sand and stick out a portion of their body at times) which is a win/win situation i'd say
 
I use play sand in my planted tanks and it looks great. I just use root fert tabs for the plants that need them. It is also ver easy to keep clean.
