Utility Rack--question.

SBee and I have too many tanks taking up floor space! her parents are getting somewhat....annoyed!

At home depot there are utility racks that say they hold up to either 450, 1000, or 1500 lbs PER shelf, and these racks are all under 100 dollars. I want to stack a 30 gallon and two 20 gallons on here, plus lots of heavy rocks and gravel that aren't in use.

Anybody have any experience with such shelving? They are steel, with particle board on each shelf. I would be concerned that the particle board would not be strong enough for the smaller tanks (their edges wouldn't sit over the metal frame of the shelf) and so I would buy stronger wood/board for those shelves....but otherwise, do you guys foresee any problems??

thanks:)

Possibly...the last thing you want is a wobbly rack that may tip over due to top-heaviness..just make sure that it remains stable...obviously, you would want to put the larger, heavier tank down below, and the smaller tanks up high. The wider(front to back) the racks are, the better.

there called "gorilla racks" right? i have one and know ppl with 2 or 3 there great very strong but your right about the partical board i would buy 3/4"or 1" plywood if your going to put 30gl on it

I've been wondering how they would hold larger tanks as well.

I have one which is actually two seperate ones stacked on top of each other, which I bought at target, but it's the same thing. It's holding a few things....

4th layer: Empty
3rd: Mostly full 10 gallon, housing newt.
2nd: 25% full, holding different newts
1st: another 10 gallon, hissing cockroaches.

I was thinking I would move stuff around today, making it mostly for fish.

Anyways, it hold them, BUT if moved it can be wobbly.

You can, of course, made a rack out of cinder blocks or other bricks. ( wood, too. )

we actually found 2 utility racks in the buy and sell last week....and whadoyaknow, but the owners used to have them set up in their petstore with multiple aquariums on them!

So we grabbed the 2 of them for 20 bucks each, and so far have grinded the rust and old paint off them, and repainted them black.

Should be setting them up ASAP, hopefully with a 20gallon, 25 gallon, and 30 gallon tank on one rack, along with plenty of stuff in need of storage.

Will update to let you know how it's holding :)
