In the store, we have a big 1000g aquarium that has continual awful algae problems. Its front faces out the window, so we can't conceivably paint that part black, as it would kind of defeat the purpose. I've heard on and off about paint or a coating that blocks UV rays... does this stuff actually exist? More importantly, is it acrylic-safe?

Blocking UV light would only help some with your problem.
You may look into some of the tint films that you see on auto windows. Some on the tank and the window that the light is coming in.
Not like black paint and could more than likely help.

Hmmmm, maybe even the mirror type to reflect most of the light.
