Hi all, I have been given a UV filter and im thinking of putting it on my 125g tank but before i do i thought i would ask what are the pros or cons of fitting one. My tank is fresh water.

Thanks steve

you said you were given a uv filter, is it a straight uv or a filter with an inbuilt uv ? pros- if set up right it will kill of any bad bateria that got passed the filter.Cons- it has to be put on the return side of the filter so you will loose some head pressure and it will take a bit to get the flow just right. But since you got it given to you I would give it a go, I have one on my fresh water sump and I think it dose a good job. I hope this helps answer your question

Thanks for the reply, Its the inline type not one which is built into a canister filter. I take it the reason for fitting it on the return side of the filter is so it wont kill good bacteria in the filter media. I have a spare powerhead lying around, Would it be ok to use this to pump water from the tank through the UV and then return it. This way i would'nt cut down on the return flow from my existing filters.

Thanks Steve

The other reason it is on the return side is so the glass tube dosent get dirty and cut down the effectiveness of the uv tube. You can use a power head with a good pre-filter but the uv would have to sit on top of the tank because if you put it under the tank it would not have enough pressure to return it to the tank, I have seen setups where they use a pump that can sit out of the water put on the return side of the uv with a pre-filter on the intake and seems to do a good job.

Thanks for your help.

Steve
