Been reading conflicting information on whether or not a UV sterilizer should be used in a planted tank.

If it's kosher, can it be hooked up permanently or is this something that should only be used when it is "needed"?

What say you?

are you wanting it for controling algae or . . .

i wonder if it would have an effect on ferts you add to the water column. . . would they still be absorbable by the plants or would it effect thier chemical makeup?

sorry i don't know the answer Roan- interesting question tho

I've used a Uv plenty of times in my planted tank with no ill effects.

Why do you want to keep one on 24/7? Unless you have greenwater or other problems going on in your tank, I don't think it's necessary for it to be running 24/7.

Lissette

P.S. Uv bulb should be replaced every few months. Replacement bulbs are a bit expensive too.

I've never had one, but have read lots of info. The consensus seems to be they are great for bouts of GW and perhaps disease. Other than that, if you don't have need for one, there are perhaps better things to spend your money on.

I run a 9w on my 75 24/7 with NO problems. Have used it for a year now.

Very heavily planted
CO2 injected
Moderate fish load
EI dosing, bye the book.

Crystal clear water
No algae...well a little :)
Fish are happy

Aquarium manager is happy
