As with the majority of issues within the Marine Hobby i have come across many different articles with regards to a UV steralizer. I am aiming to go towards a reef setup and have heard that the UV steralizer has its benefits and downfalls.

Please could someone shed a bit of light on this area for me please as i have mixed thoughts on it.

Many thanks for all your help

All it does is kill everything which passes through it. No sorting between the good and the bad. Beneficial Bactria's, pods, favourable algaes, etc. will all be killed when they flow through the UV. If you maintain your tank and quarantine new arrivals properly, you should have no problems with bad bacterias, algaes, parasites and the UV will most likely be only killing the good stuff becuase there shouldn't be any bad stuff in the tank.

Even though i do have an in-tank UV, it is purley there in case i happen to have an outbreak in the tank as i do not have the space or means for a quarantine tank at the moment..

Its a luxury that is nice to fall back on if one is needed..
