Can anyone tell me the pros and cons of using a UV Sterilizer on my 75 Gallon African Cichlid Tank? Has anyone used one successfully (or unsucessfully)? Thanks!

Does it hurt/kill any beneficial bacteria? I understand that you don't run it constantly, I think that is a good idea..

Remember that it will only kill what passes through it, and not 100% is killed. Depending on the water flow rate, and the amount of time the bacteria is exposed to the uv light, not all organisms will necessarily be killed, you would have to adjust your flow according to the UV sterilizer Manufacturers Specs...
yes it will kill some beneficial bacteria, but since most of it lives within the filter, it won't be exposed to the uv.

I have one on my 125 gal discus tank, but dont run it 100% of the time.

cool, thank you... so I assume the UV Sterilizer has some sort of an "on/off" switch?

How is yours hooked up to your discus tank, through the return line of a canister filter?
Approximately how long do you run it each week?

Thank

Is there a significant difference in the cleanliness of the water?

I appreciate all your help; the best way to learn is through someone with experience!

Opps sorry wrong button..

No i havent seen much of any differance in water conditions from it other than alge blooms being more controlled
