OMG! I can't believe it. I was in Walmart buying fish food (much cheaper than my lfs, though we don't buy fish at our Wally-world.). Anyway, I ran into a friend of mine who is not a fish-keeper, and didn't really want to be, but her kids had been given goldfish at VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL...in little bitty betta bowls. I couldn't believe it. I asked her what she had them in now..and she said a 1G, but he didn't look like he was doing too well. I told her minimum tank size was 5g, but that would only work for a little while. All those poor fish!! Anyway, she said she was going to tell her husband what I said, b/c she doesn't want him to be unhappy, or hurt.

ARGH! I was glad I happen to see her...she also said that she would tell the other parents that she knew had gotten fish from VBS.

Anyway, I knew you'd guys would understand!

Unfortunately, there seems to be this cultural subconsious image of goldfish in tiny bowls on grandma's table, or at the fair, that leads people to assume that goldfish stay tiny, can live in unheated, unfiltered miniscule containers, need minimal care, and so forth.

One of our local church youth groups did this. I was rather proud of a couple of the parents. They called the church council in outrage, gathered a bunch of the congregation, and in four days had built an outdoor goldfish pond to transfer all the gold fish into. Meanwhile the goldfish were gathered back up and kept in aerated five gallon buckets. The upside?
Local herons have figured out the goldfish pond is a virtual goldfish vending machine. They thin out the numbers every year so every summer the *&%) youth group members can learn whatever moral lesson it is they're supposed to learn by releasing their very own goldfish into the pond.

How... Christian...

Some clueless old lady thought it would be cute. She doesn't know she inadvertently murdered some of God's creatures.

Note to youth leaders. Giving out living organisms to irresposible kids not a good idea. Regardless of how great you think the kids are. Especially if you also supply inappropriate housing guaranteed to kill the animal.

Ok to keep with the rant, I was at the fair last night and saw a girl who won not one, not two, not thre..ok Ill get to the point, 8 goldfish!! now usually they give you a bag and nothing to put them in, but this year they were also giving out little critter keepers(you know, the cheap plastic 1/2 gallon things for transporting baby mice or storing feeder crickets)

:duh:

'scuse me for my dyed blonde moment.

I ment 50g...which is what I told my friend. Just had fast finger syndrome and didn't reread my post. Yeah, I know...bad girl.

Yeah, big mistake with the goldfish. We just finished our VBS program last week. I was in charge of the little kids recreation. Had a cool scavenger hunt where the kids all got plastic toy turtles. I also brought in a few of my pets, a RES and a Bearded dragon. It's a good opportunity to teach kids about respecting and caring for God's creation. Anyone else use the Son Treasure Island curriculum?
