Vacation disaster

I agree with OrionGirl, I think you better hit the water changes hard - at this point you really don't have anything to lose! Good luck!

Well, a clown just went down and the last remaining clown is gasping up near the surface. I think it is some kind of water contaminant.

I'm getting some spring water and will start doing 50% water changes as recommended. will let you know how things go

Geez, I'm sorry Boston - I wonder if maybe you should be thinking complete tear down and startover at this stage? With the water change, maybe you should use purified water - spring water has a lot of nitrates, and you don't need any more variables in the mix - Hope you track down the problem....

Well, the last clown just went down. Very sad :(

So I've now changed out the whole tank. It's a 10 gallon tank and I changed out 2 gallons with treated tap water, and 2x4 gallons with treated distilled water.

Salinity is normal
pH is 8.2 (it was actually a little lower, 7.8 before)
Ammonia is 0.25 mg/L -- will give bacteria time to deal with this
Nitrite is 0
Nitrate is ~15 mg/L (down from 160+ mg/L)

I'm going to let it sit for a while, and then introduce a chromis. If the chromis does not make it, then I fear I will have to flush the tank and start again.

I used to work at a LFS and one family found out that the cleaning lady was using straight ammonia to clean the fish tank...needless to say, the fish died.

What kind of filter system are you using? Maybe the chromis's body is stuck in the filter or under rock somewhere.

I think it is sad that you used clownfish as experimental fish after the initial disaster. Seems like you could have asked the LFS to board them as soon as they showed signs of problems instead of just watching them die.
