Vaccuum sand - how often?

I've seen differing opinions on how often to vaccuum the sand n the bottom of a reef. Should it be done with water changes or left predominantly alone?

If you have a good cleanup crew, you never have to vaccuum a sand bed.

That's what I wanted to hear! Currently I have 50-60 snails (astria/turbo) and about 30 hermits. What else is needed? I am sure there are a few bristle worms and so forth in there, but to what extent, I don't know.
