Vacuuming question

Here's another "newbie" question.

How to adequately vacuum the gravel without vacuuming up my small fish and ghost shrimp? I put a nylon stocking on the vacuum but it doesn't seem to get up enough waste that way?

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

many of my fish are attracted to the vac now..so I just gently nudge them ..with a python you can shut it down and move the vac near them they should scoot out of the way..then you can turn the python back on.
