okay when i vacuum my 10 gallon tank i get all the water out before i can fully vacuum the dirt? any tips on how i should do it more thoroughly? and is it a good idea to put the water back in the filter so the dirt gets filtered instead of changing the water?

ummmm are you using a gravel vac?

I'm a little confused as to how you are doing this. How much water are you changing out? Are you siphoning it out with a gravel vac? Of course the filter has to have water before starting it again. Are you dismanteling the whole filter?

I think he is saying that when he tries to vac all the gravel the water gets to low. If that is what you are saying then just vac about a third of the gravel every time you do a water change. And about the filter question I think you are asking if it is ok to take the water from the water change and run it through the filter to fill back up the tank. If thats it then no the filter won't take out the nitrates which is why you are doing a water changes is the first place.
