Vegetable shortening to lube o-rings?

Hey, now there's some good info! Thanks all. I think I'll be switching to Vaseline once I use up my silicone grease.

no no no, eheim "vaseline" is silicone-based. vaseline you buy in drugstores are petroleum-based. HUGE DIFFERENCE. the petroleum does the exact opposite thing, it will dry and crack your rubber o-rings.

I have a new vortex canister and the company said I can use regular vaseline. Although all I have is baby powder scent (hopefully thats ok).

I can't believe I admitted to baking a pie :o

Hey here's one I actually know a lot about...
... it would be very difficult to actually find and purchase an o-ring these days that petrolium product would hurt.... If I were to use a petrolium product I would use vaseline. In my industry, vaseline is known as the fail safe assembly lube, nothing reacts to it, it doesn't plug anything up, and there are no cemical additives that will break down and change the make-up of it. it is the only commonly used lubricant that will pass through a 1 micron filter without impeding flow. Most mechanics that I know carry vaseline in their trucks for critical or specialty assemblies.

I don't know nvision, daveedka sounds pretty convincing. I mean, its the ONE thing he actually knows a lot about! :p :D

Hmm, baby powder scented tank? I don't know dana, I use the scent of my tank to gauge its health. It should smell like fresh earth!

I use SPARKPLUG grease to grease my O-rings its 100% Silicone and only $0.49 at your local Auto parts counter for a little squezze tube.

Wow! This thread won't go away LOL!

Jeanfbs' first post and you dug this up! Gotta start somewhere I suppose :) Welcome aboard Jeanfb!!! :dance

good and bad vaseline

I have to agree on the difference between Eheim "vaseline" and my store bought Vaseline -- the Vaseline I had did indeed make rubber parts stiff. I have since gone to using a silicone lube I got from a fish store and the parts I used Vaseline one are better now. I just wish I knew exactly what parts I've used it on! I was using eh Eheim "vaseline" and then switched to american Vaseline somewhere along the way. Maybe that is why the Pro2 is leaking now???

Anona, I just hate learning this stuff the hard way....

Eheim "vaseline" is not the same as american Vaseline
