I read recently about some ppl mentioning vegetables as fish food.. Cucumber, peas, carrots, spinach etc were mentioned.. Is this true for fish food ?.. Currently I give only blood worms and flakes.. if vegetables can be given then I would wish to do that as it will give great variety and nutrients.. Also if this is true then do tell me how to prepare this as fish food and what is good and what is not good in this..

I think that we mention veggies as fish food, we are talking about for plecos. In that case I only use Romain lettuces and zucchini.

Many thanks for the updates..no I don't have plecos.. I have gouramis, tetras, angels... So no veggies for these?

I have both bettas and goldfish- I give veggies to both of them! You sure can give them veggies, depending on the type of fish. I'm not positive about the fish you have, as I don't have any of these varieties, though. Maybe someone else will have better info there? Frozen peas that have been thawed over night are GREAT, and help keep the fish from getting/ will help cure swim bladder disorders. Pop them out of the skins and crush them between your fingers into tiny pieces in a little water before you feed them. I have also fed peeled carrots that are cooked til mushy and then crushed, broccoli cooked until soft & then the little flower bits cut off into tiny pieces, Spinach that has been blanched/wilted & torn into tiny pieces. I've also peeled an orange, split the segments, and taken out the little pieces inside & fed them. My goldfish even picked apart some very thin slices of fresh cucumber that I put in their tank as a treat for the snails & ate them- I didn't think they would be able to, but they did. When I put fruits & veggies in my tanks it's like a feeding frenzy. They LOVE it. Just don't do cauliflower... I tried that once, and it made my whole house stink in about 2 hours- it was pretty awful. Give it a try with a very, very small amount of something like a skinned pea & see what happens! I don't know if the angels will eat very much of the veggies, but, the gouramis probably will- my bettas do!

I feed my mbunas lettuce, they love that and spinich. I feed my Pleco's and my ottos Lettuce and Zuchini. I haven't tried what JamieMonster recommends, but next time I have some veggies out I will try it.

I feed all my plecos veggies, but my community tank gets mainly peas. I use frozen, put them in a cup of water, microwave for a minute. Drain the water and shell the peas. The shells go to our dog, Minnie (after Minnie Mouse !) and then I mush up (nice scientific term !( the peas and drop them in the tank. I do this about every 10 days. I do have a male betta in the tank, and he does eat the peas. Good luck.

Many fish will gladly eat veggies. I give my ABNs cukes, zukes and blanched greens. Shrimp also get those along with blanched peas and carrots. I've had severums and festivums that would destroy spinach and greens in nothin' flat. Mbuna like greens also.

Any fish that rely on vegetables for their diet will benefit greatly from your giving them to them on top of any staple food. I feen my Africans a few different types of aquatic plants from time to time as well as cucumber, etc
