veggies in a tank all the time

:huh: is it ok to leave a piece of cucmber/orange in my goldie tank all the time. i mean a new piece every day obviously but so they always have something to pick at. is this ok or is it a bad idea? they have had alternating cucmber and orange in the tank for a couple of days, and if i take it out they start snacking on the live plants. just wondered if im ok with what im doing, and if not then why? thanks :goldfish:
 
I do it in my community tank. Alternating between squash, courgettes, (sometimes lettuce or green beans- or whatever else I have on hand - recently asparagus).

I've got a couple of species of ornamental snails that fancy themselves lumberjacks on my stem plants if I don't leave veggies available to them.

It doesn't completely stop their herbivorous habits- but it limits it quite a bit.


I leave mine in until it's all gone (not normally more than a day and a half to two days)- although if it didn't get eaten so quick I probably would keep refreshing it.
 
Don't see why not. My goldies love veggies. As long as you change it out, I can't see any harm.
 
;) all good, have just changed out their orange for some cucumber. what else could i put in there? i change it out every evening before lights out as i dont want it sitting in there too long.
 
zucchini (blanched), green beans (blanched) a few shelled peas are always good for digestion. mine aren't picky- what they don't want, the snails will eat. I heard that goldies like oranges. Never tried that, but it sounds like your experience makes it ring true.
 
You do have to keep that in moderation. Some fruits and vegetables are high in sugar content and therefore must be avoided. Some such as broccolis are gassy and may cause buoyancy issues if fed too much with it.

Seaweeds and alfalfa are okay but I have limited access to these myself. There's Moringa olifera that my goldfish love to eat in the pond as the leaves fall and that plant in particular is used as a herbal med or supplementary diet for health issues.

I've used pear once and then combined banana, squash and broccoli baby foods into a gelatin mix thus they make a small fraction of the bigger mix. The trouble with choosing the right foods is some may be okay but have another certain substance that is inappropriate if used excessively. I guess what you need to do is really vary your options and don't stick on one too long. They are able to obtain various nutrients this way too.

Genetics has always influenced the ability of particular goldfish to swim especially with food intake so it is not surprising some goldfish get floaty to particular foods that others don't even though the particular foods are said to contribute least likely to floaty issues.
