good morning, I have read about people drilling a whole in thier return lines from a refugium so when a power outage happens that the main tank will not keep syphoning out back to the refugium. what size whole is usually drilled in 1 inch pvc. I have 4 return lines and would like to add this protection to the tank. tia for the help.

return lines

thanks for the input , just got a chance to check in. maybe i am confused about a refugium vs a sump. i have a 50 gallon tank below my main tank that is used as a dsb filter with my water cycling from the top tank and returning from the lower tank. (dumb question I guess) what is the difference btwn the 2, my lfs calls my setup a refugium. also why would it usually set above the tank? tia for the help.:confused:

The difference to start with.....

To be honest, not a great lot...the main difference ( if you can call it that ) is that a sump tank is used not just for the Fuge, but also to store equipment and gain extra water volume and have the benefits of them...

A Refugium is an area, whether it be in the sump, hang on the back or mounted above the tank, is just an extra area used for filtration, pod growth, macro algae growth. People dont usually store the skimmers, heaters etc in there as its only usually a small area or box...

So, if you store equipment in there, personally, i would class it as a sump...
