Very Disappointed

I'm very disappointed that out of dozens of experienced people here only a couple helped me out. (here is the thread: http://www.aquariacentral.com/forums/showthread.php?p=657229#post657229) I'm a newbie and thought this was the right place to go, but was mistaken because lots of view to my post, only a couple of comments (thanks for the people who did reply), and no reply after my last two posts. Well, I got home from work yesterday and the scared tiger barb died on the exact same spot he was hiding, on top of the gravel, under the fake plant. The only weird thing I could think is that there was a white film over his eyes, but he looked absolutely perfect everywhere else, no sign of illness or injury, however his death was a matter of time, since he was hiding all the time, he wasn't coming out to eat.

Anyway, not sure how often I'll be posting here after my first bad experience. I'm sure a couple of you could have given me a few ideas to try and save him or make him more comfortable -- he might still have died, mind you, but at least I'd have tried to save his life. Instead I had to watch him starve to death as most people refused to take a couple of minutes of time out of their day to help me out, and having fish for only 2 months, I didn't (and still don't!) know enough about it myself to even know what my options were (and I searched online frantically for something I could do to no avail).

Too late now...

I don't think this site has in any way proved to be a professional place to turn, but yet a place to turn for advice & suggestions. Fish do different things for different reasons, and sometimes they do die. That's just the fact of it. From what I saw, someone tried to give you an answer, and your reply seemed to be a little defensive. I wouldn't be putting this site down because you didn't get the answers you "wanted" and that your fish died...it's not because of anyone from Aquaria Central. I just think it was rude.

The only time I got defensive was the one poster who only replied "you're overstocked" -- that didn't answer my question at hand, it didn't say why my one fish was hiding, and as I said, they're not fully grown yet, as of today I'm not overstocked (and I'm not denying that I might be in the future, I'm just saying now I'm not yet). I test my water every other day, and do 50% water changes every week -- his answer is not "not what I wanted to hear" his statement did not answer my question -- two different things. Yes fish sometime will die and there's nothing you can do, however you can TRY. All I wanted was to try something to help him live, no miracles, but a chance to help him out.

Just as you said, I wasn't seeking professional help, but I was seeking advice. I was disappointed that barely anyone wanted to give me any advice and my last post was completely ignored. (That's not to say that I don't appreciate the few people who did reply -- however I'm sure someone here who ignored my post had a suggestion of something to try.)

Sometimes folks (like myself) read posts, and figure out that we don't know the answer, and can't think of anything to try. It isn't because we don't like you, we just don't always have all the answers. If I posted in every thread where I didn't know the answer to a question, I'd have 1,000 posts in no time.

looking at your thread from the link provided it looks like sarcare answered your question quite well as it may have been due to aggression. stress can weaken the immune system and with the fish not eating this would seriously affect the fish.
removing it would have been the best thing to do and from sacare's info i would have done that.
sorry you lost your fish but maybe the people who read your post did not have the answer.
also during our move sme posts were lost and although one person re added their post others may not have realised.

I would have posted again, but quite frankly the same thing happened to me and I NEVER figured out what to do. Honestly, there are a lot of threads that NO ONE replies to. When my fish got sick not a single person replied to help. People come with questions and fail to get a single answer. I've come here with problems and not got a single reply--even when I knew there were people here who had advice. It is frustrating to see some people get all the replies when they are clearly not taking the advice and just want some one to tell them it is ok to do what they are doing.

Partially it is because it is much easier to point out those basic errors then to try and solve often difficult diagnostic issues.

I missed the original thread .

I use to keep tiger barbs and I think the best answer was from sarcare. Tiger barbs are fairly aggressive. the one that was hiding was probably picked on.

the tank was a 20 with 7 barbs(at the time) and a few danios(4).

I'm not sure how much hiding space was provided..etc. you may have has a very aggressive male . I had one that would pick on the school slowly causing a decline in numbers..some times when you have that situation, it is best to get a bigger tank and add more barbs..the extra number would help spread the agression out. You could try adding more to this tank but you would then have to start looking at the overstocked question.
tiget barbs do best in a school of 6 or more.. 6 is the minimum number recomended..if they are all about the same level of aggression you may be okay..but often the situation may require more fish.

yes you could have added a few more immature tiger barbs but eventually you would have to address the overstock issue.

Honestly, There is a large number of things that could have caused the problem. Many times if I see a post that has been answered correctly, or I dont know the answer to it, I will not just guess or repeat what others have said.

You want an answer on your barb? ok, mabey he was sick to begin with, mabey he had nitrate poisoning when you bought him and was already on his way out, perhaps he has some sort of parasite, it is possible it is getting beat up by others (despite size) its also possible he is the agressor, and is wearing himself out due to always chasing other fish. Or it could be one of hundreds of other problems that could not be determined by autopsy or mabey that wouldnt even find it.

I dont mean to sound so harsh, but I feel as though you are blaming this site for the fishs' death. Your problem had no definitive signs to let us help you. Thats not your fault, nor is it ours. Ive had fish die like that, but I dont blame anyone for it. If you look arround, plenty of people here are willing to help, but we are not going to know everything, and are not going to help with a problem we have no knowledge of. Stick arround, keep posting, and keep reading. This is the top site for advice, but none of us are superheros.
