:( Clyde, my beautiful marble angel, is suffering. Just came home from a week long vacation, and his eyes are popping, and his stomach is distended. He is very lethargic, and seems to be breathing to fast. Before we left on vacation, Clyde had a small reddish sore on one side of his mouth. I did a 25% water change, added sea salt, stress zyme, and aquasafe. He seemed to be doing just fine, until we came home last nite. I put 4 Maracyn-Two tablets in water last night, and will add 2 more tonite...( 20 gallon tank). Can he be saved? And should I quarantine him? I have several other little fish and one other angel in tank with him. Please help.......don't know what else to do... :sad Thanx for listening

I'm so sorry!

my only other suggestion would be to increase the temperature if possible. i hope everything works out!!

Water parameters?

Since you've already treated the main tank with antibiotics, you will definitely want to monitor it for ammonia--most antibiotics will kill the beneficial bacteria in your tank as well as any harmful ones. I'd plan on doing several large water changes, and review your normal maintenance schedule--most ailments of this type are ultimately related to declining water quality.

thank you for quick response, still have questions

I will try a 50% water change, and will up the temp.....to 90 degrees? And should Clyde be in quarantine?

Since you've already medicated the main tank, I likely wouldn't bother with a hospital tank. At this point, you've already exposed the main tank to the medications, so will need to monitor it. If you can setup a q-tank for the angel, it would likely be better in the long run for the bacteria and other fish--I'd probably remove the angel to hospital, then do some large water changes and run some carbon on the main tank.

Raising the temp to 90 is pretty extreme, and likely will cause problems for the fish unless you are able to increase the surface agitation a great deal--warm water contains less oxygen than cooler water, and this reduction in O2 will not help the fish at all.

i think the highest safe temp for an angelfish is about 82 degrees. I'm pretty sure, but I'm not positive, so you may want to do a little quick research. anyways. i think 82 should be sufficient.

more questions

If I set up a hospital tank for the sick angel, should I then do a 50% water change in the big tank, and treat Clyde alone in the quarantine tank? And what chemicals should I put in hospital tank....sea salts, maracyn 2, stress zyme and aquasafe?

I wouldn't use that many chemicals. Treating for chlorine/chloramines would be the only chemcials I would use. The rest are snake oil at best, algae factories at worst. So, in the hospital tank--treat to remove chlorine/chloramine if needed. Bring it up to temp, add medication. Add fish. Test daily for ammonia/nitrites, do water changes to keep these as low as possible so they don't further weaken the fish.

another question? lol

Ok, so should I quarantine angel to hospital tank, then add Maracyn 2, sea salt, and stress zyme to his tank, then do a 50% water change in the large tank ? I really appreciate any help, as I am fairly new at this.:)

Yes, get the angel out of the tank, then do a water change to remove the medications from the main tank. You'll still want to monitor it for ammonia and nitrites.
