video of apisto female and non-swimming fry

id wait to see if the other females fry are alright the males dont tend to be a big problem in my experience its mostly rival females and stressed mamas. what kind of plant or other separation do you have? its best if they cant really see each other and caves at opposite corners of the aquarium. technically IMO for a trio to be easy i wont say possible you need a bigger tank foot size like 40breeders are perfect, just 20 highs keep them close together where they run into each other a lot but the corydoras are fine they make it so they pull their aggression away from each other.

i could not find a single fry from the other female. she hasn't been hovering around her residence which leaves to believe there are no more :( I did witness something extremely scary. The female with about 20-50 fry transferred all the fry from the cichlid stone to the corner of the tank which is pretty much out in the open except for an uprooted amazon plant which provides good cover. I watched the other female kinda sneak up on the fry and started eating them! She was quickly chased out. I screamed at what I just witnessed and am transferring her to my peaceful 29 gallon. I don't know what else to do. If I don't move her, I'm sure the babies will all disappear tomorrow. I've watched the male and he seems pretty harmless and not interested in eating the fry. Same with the corys.

Anyway, I'm going to set up my 10 gallon soon to hopefully raise the fry when they get older. I hope that my instincts are right to take the rival female out. I hope she doesn't terrorize neons and glowlights and my oto cats.

I'm guessing the other female's fry got eaten by the other female which is unfortunate. But I'll never find out. The only threat I've seen to the fry is that one attack on the female. The other fish pretty much keep to themselves.

yeah its the tight space if you move the one female out you should be just fine and she shouldn't give the other fish a prob in the other tank. the males tend to do their thing and thats swim around not really caring they only get to caring when their are other males around. imo 20 is just too small for trios that aren't setup to move out quick when eggs are laid. ive been thinking and im not sure of making an acrylic or plexi glass divider for just such an occasion. make it over flow style and slide it in after you see the female laid eggs or some fry and separate the two females then no fry loss from saboteurs.

I think the plexiglass idea is a good one. it might reduce the stress of both parties. The female has moved the fry from inside the cichlid stone to the corner of the tank, then back into a different cichlid stone, and then this morning, outside under the uprooted amazon plant. She's keeping the pygmy cories at bay for the most part.

The babies are still not free swimming. They're kinda wriggling around on the gravel being like jumping beans sorta. it's a fascinating thing to watch. Sucks being at work.

I'm preparing infusoria and bbs when and if they make it next week.

yay i love culturing live foods its fun to watch them too and how excited babies and fish get when you put them in the tank. ive been trying to find larger foods for when the fry are too large for bbs and infu.

the fry should do fine if the other female isnt in there.

can you get a good head count of how many fry you have if you know around how many you can tell if their eating if you see less after free swimming and right now is a good time as they aren't jutting around.

are the caves you use enclosed like if you were to take it out of the water would it hold some in it?(its for future ideas)

and i just thought of it lol dont know why i didnt earlier if you want to spy at night you can do one of two things and it wont effect the fish using either a bright red led or a dim moon colored one

Update on my baby apistos (new videos)

they're free swimming now and being fed frozen bbs a few times a day. apisto mom and dad are still guarding them pretty well. I've gone from about 40-50 babies to about 7 or 8 that I can see. As soon as mom stops guarding them, i'll have to fish them out and hopefully my 10 gallon will be cycled by then.

the first video, apisto Dad takes one of the fry in his mouth and just spits him out to a better feeding spot? or maybe it's totally random. it happens at around 31 seconds if you want to skip to it.

the second video, apisto mom is just guarding them in the open.
