Video Update: African Cichlid Tank

love the pleco on your avatar. were you talking about the yellow cichlid in my tank, if so i have know idea what he is but he is beautiful. i usually get a lot of crap from people for having american and african cichlids together, but i never have a problem. oh and ibr3ak i love your rocks, i go around town looking for some like that no luck though, thus my setup.

Thanks for the compliment on the Pleco! :D I spoil them! Oh- Yellow Tail Acei is in the first posted video. It's a dark blue Mumba with Yellow fins. :D I have one, and would like a tank full of only them but they get a good size... 5-6 inches, thus only one for now- need a good size tank like 100+ for a colony of those beauties!

i talk on aquarium advice, but i was telling people how i want to own my own hatchery and instead of telling me to go for this one dude told me to aim lower. whats that, thats not how you inspire people. then he put me down about keeping africans an americans saying they will live but never thrive. all mine are thriving.

by thrive i am sure he meant breeding and being kept within ideal husbandry practices. There is no way you can keep american and african cichlids in the same tank and maintain both in an ideal environment.

I agree that it was a jerk thing to say, and i'm sure he was speaking in a "higher-than-thou" tone, but he has a point, if he were to be more diplomatic, and let you know the differences in water params and environment for the difference species.

Being educational is much better than being confrontational. You learn with every new fish you keep and every tank you add to your MTS. It's part of the hobby. Don't give up! It gives you reason to purchase a new tank! :D Keep a tank of americans and a tank of africans! You CAN have the best of BOTH worlds!!! I have a tank of Victorians and a tank of Malawi because even within the broad "african cichlid" nomenclature, there are still differences in husbandry practices. I just want to keep my fish as close to their native environments as possible.

I too, at one time kept malawi, victorians, and river cichlids together. I had to rehome a few and go buy more tanks! I <3 new tanks! heehee! ;)
