Vinegar eel culture question

I wouldn't personally sell a large culture of my VE for less than $6. You have to realize that at LEAST $3 and probably more is giong to go to shipping, so thats less than $3 profit for the culture itself, not to mention the effort of selling it, packing it, and taking it to be shipped, plus shipping supplies etc. That is still very llittle if any profit. Just my 2 cents ;). I never sell mine for less than that.

I didn't realize he meant a harvestable culture. Mine was lower because it was a starter culture.

I read that they reproduce faster if you do 3 parts vinegar to 1 part water. I'm trying that in a small jar. Also that they also do better if you use wide mouth jars because of the larger oxygen exchange.

Yeah, I have about 4 wide mouth jars with vinegar eels in them. I have a few that are half and half vinegar to water, but my most recent ones are about 3 parts vinegar to 1 part water. The extra food does seem to allow for faster reproduction. I keep them in old wide mouth flower vases and pickle jars lol.

I keep waiting for mine to start climbing up the sides but... they don't want to cooperate. The cotton ball in the long necked bottle method seems a little wasteful. The coffee filter method seems a little messy. I wish there was an easier way to harvest them.

I harvest mine with a coffee filter, but I found if you use a plastic funnel and put the filter in there and pour it into an old water bottle that way there is less spillage and so it's not too badly messy. I never had any luck with the cotton ball method.

I read about a method using a salad spinner, like a centrifuge, gets a mass of the eels to sink to the bottom of the container so they're easier to collect. I want to try it once I find a salad spinner for under $10.

What's wasteful? If you return the vinegar solution back into your main culture after you harvest the eels, you'll have a never ending supply. I usually keep two bottles and harvest each one every 24 hours.

Don't you lose a bunch of eels that are in the cotton ball?
