When I went and got my fish today, I went to a place on the south east side of houston that one of the guys at petco reccommended to me. He said he didn't even buy fish from the store he worked at.

Anyway, this was a fabulous store, or it may just be my first introduction to a real LFS of any size. They had 250 freshwater tanks, 200 marine tanks, and 50 tanks dedicated to coral. It was a really cool store. Wish I had been there prior to my tank as they had a lot of 2nd hand stuff for sale that they guarunteed.

Saw some amazing fish there. They had a full grown Malaysian Cichlid that definitely had some aggression issues. It would follow you up and down its tank biting at the glass the whole time.

Had a truly impressive collection of Synos. Their cichlid collection was nice, but not as diverse as there catfish. Had several large specimens of oscars, jaguars, JDs, and such. Had several mating pairs as well for sale as well as smaller and medium sized varieties. The truly impressive thing was they had a really large tank on one end with what appeared to be a large variety of Cichlid with a bump on its head going for $250-$300 depending on size.

They also had some EBJDs for sale for $25. I wasn't planning to drop that change on one fish yet, so I got a 6 inch JD for $8. However, I asked if he had trouble keeping the EBJDs alive because all of them were about 1.5-2 inches and he said that the only problem he knows of is getting them to rebreed, but that they offer a 3 month guaruntee on their EBJDs because some people have had problems with them. I looked at all the tanks in the store and only saw one dead fish which was actually under a monstrous pleco, and they removed it and did a vac on the tank as soon as I pointed it out to them.

The last thing was that at the back they had a tank where they soaked their own drift wood for sale. He said they used to use it for Gold fish and coy, but he got tired of messing with people that didn't know how to care for them so they stopped carrying such a large number.

All in all I was really impressed.

Near me theres a store of 400+ Fresh water and 200 + saltwater and coral tanks. Truly amazing. I saw so many fish I've never seen before. Inlucding a 2 foot Koi and some arowanas. The wierdest fish there was a golden dog face fish. So weird looking, it had teeth! They also had reptiles and rabbits etc. Great place.

PS When you first walk in, they have 3 210 Gallon tank s right there, inlcuding a coral and a plant tank.

sounds good. my LFS consists of Petland Discounts (i buy my meds and fishfood here, its OK i guess, mostly i go to talk to the cute ladys who work there hehe) , 3 asian owned fish stores (2 of them are pretty big, but i never buy anything there, i just browse. its dead expensive! im asian myself, so im not surprised... :p: plus they sell painted tetras so yeah...). Nearest Petco's is a short subway ride to Manhattan or 20 mile trip to Glen Cove in Long Island. But the best fish store i've seen so far is a place called Fishtown USA, a short bus ride there. They have 250 tanks for tropical freshwater, marine, coral/live rocks, goldfish/koi as well as an indoor goldfish/koi pond. the tanks are very clean, and stock looks healthy with little dead loss. i bought 9 Black Phantom tetras there, 2 of which died from a fungal infection in my tank. Just wished they had a longer return policy. only 24 hours for live fish i believe.

return is same for the fish store near me^. I guess they know there fish are healthy.

PS I didn't see one dead fish at this store, no BS!

Besides the feeders.......*PACUS And Pirahnas8 :p:

I'm new to this board. I've been reefkeeping for 3 years and have just started the journey of a planted tank. If you ever come into Houston the best LFS for FW is Village Tropical. For good prices on equipment and less expensive fish I'd use City Pets.

I'm guessing you're referring to Tropical Fish Depot and I've heard that place is nice. Glad you've found the great world of LFS, now you'll get addicted to visiting them.

hmm

actually Fish Ranch off of Bellaire and 59 was the one I went to.

my LFS is pretty small, but they carry some really rare fish. last time I checked, they had a barracuda tetra, an african pike tetra, a silver distichodus, psuedomugil furcatas, angelicus syno cats, not to mention the royal panaques and even a true, authentic, zebra pleco. with salt they've got: a giant 2" sleeper goby, aquacultured hard corals of every kind imaginable, and even an octopus! yeah, i love my LFS.

My lFs is very similiar^

Is there a place to find LFS such as by region? I have 2 near me, that are ok, but I'm mainly forced to go to PetSmart. I'm trying to find some others LFS I could go to so I can price shop especially when it come to equipment like tanks and stands.
