Hello everyone! I'm new to the forums as well as to cichlids. My boyfriend got two cichlids, one Peacock (blindish in one eye, named Wade) and one Convict (named Negasonic Warhead Teenager, called Neg or Nega for short). Wade soon started attacking Nega so we separated them and after that, Wade started moving rocks about. He has moved them so much that you can see the glass bottom, but even as I type this, Incan hear him moving more. I have read that this is a natural digging behavior/ he's making a nest for breeding.
My questions are:
1) Is there anything else this rock arranging could be, or perhaps you can expand on this behavior?
2) Is Wade a Wadette?

There are photos, they aren't great, sorry, the tank isn't dirty, but for whatever reason, it looks it.

That is normal behavior and either gender does it.

Your pics aren't clear enough for me to figure out the gender.

What size is the tank and how long has it been set up? The water does appear cloudy so I'm wondering if the tank isn't fully cycled yet. What are your water test results?

Water test results are all good. I'll see what I can do for better quality pictures.

Thank you.

What brand and type test kit are you using? Usually a cycled tank will have zero ammonia, zero nitrite and some level of nitrate above 10ppm at least.

Ok, sorry this took so long, we ended up just completely cleaning out the tank and apparently something was in fact off. Let's see if these pictures are any better for you guys. I have more of him in the temp holding bucket, but I don't think it will be too helpful.

What do you mean you ended up cleaning out the tank?

He stopped doing it. We added a red zebra stripe cichlid and he started taking up the rock arrangements, making a few bare spots in the tank. We have since moved them to a 55 gallon and all rock arranging has completely stopped.... And fighting has begun, despite all the hides. The convicts aren't helping either.
I'd also like to add that Wade is MUCH darker now. A dark gray a few shades short of light black. He spends most of his time in his giant rock and only comes out to break up Nega and Yellow Tail (two female convicts) from their fights.. or when the zebra comes around (he flares at him). I can see Wade's lateral line, so I'm pretty sure he's stressed.
