Wal*Mart

Im always weary of a place that has all of their "tanks" (cells) on one big central filter. It may not be their fault that an oscar comes in with ich, but it is whoever designed that system's fault that every other fish they have in stock is now exposed to it.

a lot of stores and people with fish rooms have central filtration.

Yes but most at least have a separate unit for each 4 feet, meaning that they can have africans in the 1st 4 feet, sa-ca in the next, livebearers in the next, etc. thereby at least suiting the needs of the fish. Walmart has ONE unit for all the tanks on each side of the partition, meaning africans, tetras, oscars, whatever, all on the same filter.

And I am weary of ANY store with central filtratration, before buying from anyplace with those units i check all the cells going into that unit.

If you have someplace to quarentine go for it. There return policy kick's butt. So as long as your not going to throw them in with you healthy fish. Who cares. (unless your like my wife who gets attached to the fish very easily).

Some Pros and Cons of Wal-Mart

The cons:
Be very cautious about buying fish from Wal-Mart. I was talking to one of the kids who mainly takes care of the tanks at my local Wal-Mart, and he told me that, on average, 7 out of 10 fish that they get in, comes in with ich. He also told me that they does EVERY tank with ICH Clear constantly. I have bought a few fish from here, as this is the only place within 70 miles that sell them. I check them out real good first though. I did have 1 neon tetra that showed up with ich a couple of days after I got it home, and then died shortly after that. That was the only problem I had. Non of the other fish ever caught it.

The Pros:
The kid at Wal-Mart did tell me that they can order some fish that they don't normally stock. They have a big list of fish that they can order. You just have to let them know before Tuesday, and they get their deliveries on Thursday. However, they will not hold the fish for you more than 24 hrs.
They had some Sailfin Mollies in a few weeks ago. Benn considering having them order some in for me. They are a real pretty fish. Can't find much info on them anywhere though. If anybody knows anything about these, or has had any experience with them, please let me know if they are worth it. They run about $5 a fish.

5 dollars each for a sailfin mollie? It seems high to me. Lyre-tail? The kind with the fan tail? Even those shouldn't be that costly. I'd say no more than 2 to 3 dollars each.

Mollies are easy to keep. Some prefer salt, but if your ph is above 7 they will do gr8 without salt.

well i bought a pleco from walmart, brought him home to my 10 gallon tank and 2 days later noticed my 3 black balas and 3 silver dollars fish covered with ich, immediately went and bought rid ich but to no avail and they all died. thats the last time i will buy from walmart, i felt so helpless
