WalMart and Petsmart NASTY Tanks

told one walmart a Gorilla could do a better job with their tanks...

"Contact the Petsmart Petcare manager. If nothing is done, contact the Store Director. If that doesn't help, contact the regional petcare manager.

Also, ask them if they are treating the ich. When I worked there, new shipments always brought in ick, and unfortuantly, sometimes shipements come before current stock is sold. Petsmart treats for ich after every shipment."

This is why new fish get quarentined. How often does petsmart get new fish? Every week? It takes 3 weeks to get ich out of a system. Which means that all the tanks would be permanantly infested by a parasite... that you are KNOWINGLY selling to people along with their fish! Even if it's every month, this means that for half the month every fish in your store is infested. That right there is the saddest attempt to defend someone that I have ever seen.

Ok, when you run a pet store, go ahead and quarantine a whole shipment. Yes, new fish every week. Rarely are the fish affected, in my old store, at least, because we kept them healthy. A fish gets ich if it can't fight it off. And I always told people to quarantine new fish first, its common sense. Whether or not people listen is another story. I alawys told them to watch for ich, as just about every pet store is infected with it. I was not defending PetsMart, just stating how to solve the problem he was facing. Why the flaming?

Instead you should have explained in a nice way why you thought I was misinformed or wrong, and then if I responded rudely, then you can flame...

Roger... maybe I was a little rude. I do apologize :)

Just wanted to point out that if they bring Ich in with every shipment, and it takes quite a while to get rid of it, AND they don't quarentine, then every tank in the store is going to have the parasite in their tanks. It's not like columnaris that's always in the water waiting to strike, it's a parasite.

And the LFS I frequent does quarentine their new shipments. :Shrugs... it's a different scale then petsmart though, that's for sure.

It is very simple STOP BUYING FROM CHAIN STORES. If you have access to the net, you have access to a MULTITUDE of breeders...Join a local fish club and go to their auctions...Buy from Aqubid...Alot of reputable people there with great stock...Great, healthy young stock that for the most part has had immpecable care before being sold...You are also going to find those "hard to find" species that the lfs probably doesnt carry...

well all walmarts are not bad. The walmart in regina sask is the best place i ever seen, well for walmart. the guy knows a lot about the fish, keeps the tanks very cleen. if you ask him a question about the fish that he does not know he will say well i am not sure, not it should work. And if there is a sick fish in the tank he makes sure no one buys from the tank. some times i just go to a petstore to see how dumb the people really are. I was very impressed so i bought some fish, snails. the snails he didn't no much about but i bought them anyway.
