Walmart for fish?

lol i actually have opened up the cabinet to look at the sump. it was ok but you could tell it doesnt get serviced very often.

I have bought fish from WallyWorld in the past without any problems. However, the store got to be less than a decent place to get fish. I suspect it was the turnover in people that caused it.

My brother recently "rescued" a rather dapper white betta with cool looking little red spots in it's fins from the local walmart. Sometimes they have some interesting stuff but having That Pet Place/That Fish Place as my LFS, they usually get my business. That store is awesome!

I bought fish from there as a kid. Anymore, I think they shouldn't carry them as the majority of them don't have just one person who takes care of them. So every employee who happens to be in the vicinity of the tanks is the one who has to help the customers. Usually, the fish are pretty healthy when they come in. But after a few days, they're not doing too hot.

I, personally, am completely against them having a fish department.

But QT any fish you buy, no matter where you get them from. YOu may never have anything happen, but then one day, you may bring home the an Otocinclus with a case of ich that you hadnt really noticed, and BAM!!! You're tank is in jeopardy over a $2 fish!

Our WalSmart has vastly improved its fish care and quality in the past year and a half from "Night of the living dead" to "clean healthy and competitive". I have bough some from them, the rest from better chains and family owned LFS. I chose carefully and if the fish or any of the tanks on the same filter system are diseased I wont buy.

I do all the required water acclimation test and net the fish into the tank, but I never QT. I think QT is a valued insurance that is worth considering if you are that cautious, but Im a bit of a risk taker don't do it accepting that I may have an outbreak in-spite of my UV sterilizer, and have only had 1 breakout out of countless introductions that was successfully treated by medicating the whole tank with just 1 dose. I also think the UV has played a big role in my tanks being 99% disease free in-spite of non-QT.

I will also add that I have experienced numerous fish deaths in the past all due to water chemistry which took me months to work out as our water is 800 PPM hard. But that's all in the past now.

I've purchased fish from Walmart over the years, they're not too bad here really. The worst part is trying to find an employee to net them for you. But I've had no worse luck with them than with the LFS. Last time I wandered through I did see that someone (I assume a sick ******* of a little kid) had put two bettas in the same cup and they were both dead. :(

I bought fish from Walmart. I bought a small school of 6 Harleqen Rasboras and they are still alive after 3 years. QT your fish before adding to the main tank for a few weeks. ! also bought a angelfish that lived for a couple of years from their. It died recently.

I've bought two bettas at the Wal-Mart near me. When I bought them, there was actually somebody in charge of the fish that knew somewhat of what he was doing. He was actually putting some of the bettas in the tanks with compatible fish.

I have a friend who bought fish from Wal-mart and still has two of the six or so she bought two or three years ago. (But, for the record, I don't agree with her fish-keeping philosophies.)

A 90 day return policy? I may visit WM!

lol yea thats what i said.. 90 days!?!
I went to walmart today and checked out the tanks and most of them had numerous dead fish except the danio tank which looked pretty healthy. I almost bought a few but i decided it wasnt worth the risk, plus i couldnt find a worker anywhere near the pet section so i was like screw it. But i did take a look at their oscars and they were beautiful! they all looked like they were in good shape and had gorgeous color! Ive never had oscars before but seeing them made me want to get them lol.. but i didnt and i probably would get them from there.
