This weekend, I was at the local Walmart, looking for something completely unrelated, when I happened to pass through their fish department. To my suprise, I saw a sign on one of the tanks, that I would have never expected at Walmart. I have to give them credit, at least this store seems to be showing improvement. The tank said,

"The fish in this tank are not available for purchase.
They are being treated for an illness.
We apologize for any inconvenience."

After seeing the sign, I had a closer look around and found no dead fish, and that every tank appeared clean and appropriately stocked. I was very impressed.

But aren't all the tanks run by the same sump/filter such as like Petsmart/Petco? So if one tank is being QT for illness, aren't all the others just infected as well? I seen this happen at Petco and they put up a sign and stick a cup of aquarium salt in the sick tank, while all the other tanks have no signs nor cups.

Yes there are places everywhere, big chain stores even, where knowledgeable people work and some are allowed to do the right thing. However walmart does not hire someone specifically for pets let alone for fish so the chances of having someone like that in a particular store is slim.

As you all have experienced here not everyone has good fundamental knowledge of fish husbandry so staffing a store, any store with knowledgeable people becomes a problem.

my local walmart has a marineland set up for tanks and they are all connected and cycle thru a large wet dry filter so when 1 tank has disease it is just spread to every tank since they all share they same filter system. and often fish are not for sale due to this. and they use deceptive labeling on fish sales. they have a hand printed sign hanging in fish area that says 3 day fish warranty BUT the pre printed walmart fish bag says 21 day warranty and i have had more then 1 confortation with the pet dept manager over this when they know they are selling sick fish. IF you demand the store manager to come address this dispute and demand he honor the pre printed bag they will, you just have to be assertive and demand they follow walmart policy. a complaint to the corp office will get you a response yes the policy is 21 days not 3 and they claim they will remind the store manager to correct this. keep your fish bag and reciept for 21 days or you wont get the refund. the live fish policy is pre printed on the fish bags they use or at least they are at the walmart near me.

The last time I got a fish from walmart (forever ago), the person that bagged it told me there was a 30 day warranty. I double checked, because the most I had heard of before that anywhere was 14 days. When the fish died 3 and a half days later, I took it back, and they told me it was a 3 day warranty. Nothing said anywhere how long the warranty was... not the bag, reciept... anything... That is a large part of why that was the last fish I bought there.

However, as I said initially, it does seem that this one walmart is improving.

my walmart here in goldsboro, nc is amazing at taking care of the fish. i spent some time and educated the fish keeper there. since then they have had less deaths and much healthier fish. i willingly buy fish from them. my walmart also recently started carrying dragonfish and peacock cichlids. they are no longer carrying the "south american cichlids" which consisted of firemouths and jack demspeys. they have parrots and oscars too. they also have pretty much the best prices in town and do honor the 21 day fish return(even though the sign does say 3 days). i guess it just depends on the store...and whether or not the manager you talk to is a jerk or not.
