want cycled tank at school...

So what are your plans for breaks and other times you are not in school? You can't take a populated tank on the bus.

Are there no pet stores near your school? Even Walmart should have tanks to sell. You could take some gravel or filter media to seed the new tank, and you are set.

I was thinking the same thing. Why not have a tank at home and a tank at school and just take your fish home with you without taking the whole setup. With both tanks running full time, whether you are there or not, you'd have two cycled tanks for your fish wherever you are are at the time.

I have a tank at home (40br) where I've been keeping my fish in breeder containers while we're here and I plan to leave the other tank at school and just bring the fish; that said I wont be taking them home for another break until summer at which time my parents are driving me back, so I'm not so anxious about that. I'm probably not coming back to the city for spring break, I'll have to find someone to feed them for that week.

I picked up a marineland 4 classic for half off from petco. I was initially planning to divide it with needlepoint canvas but them both fish have very little room (2g of space but its mostly verticle) plus dividing it takes away from the clean look of the tank and both my boys are aggressive enough that I would be worried they would find a way around the divider and I dont need to have to deal with the stress of 2 torn up fish. I'm going to bring a de-rimmed 2.5g minibow to use as a second tank.

I'll be using a handful of gravel from my home tank for each of the new ones. I'll also be bringing a as much old filter media from the 40br I have here as I feel comfortable sparing. I'll be using a whisper 20i on the 2.5g minibow and the stock marineland biowheel filter on the 4g. both will be planted with java ferns, anubias and pennywort. I'm also bringing a short length of hose to use as a gravel vac. I have a heater for the 4g but am holding off on one for the 2.5g to cut down on expense; if the fish in there seems listless I'll get something to heat it.

I'll be transporting both tanks home and setting them up again for the summer in NYC, and then next year i'll probably leave the fish at school for my short (week long) breaks and find someone to feed them so I can fly home. for winter break I'll leave the tanks set up at school and bring just the fish home. I'm probably going to try to start shipping them home instead of taking a bus in the future.
