I have never attempted to breed these fish, but have owned several and have thought about it, which led to much research! The most commonly quoted factors were:
1) having both male and female (overlooked frequently)
2) lowering the water level over time, which simulated dry season and had the added affects of increasing hardness/dissolved solids.
3) doing large/frequent partial water changes with slightly cooler water which simulated the rainy season and induced spawning!
You may find other factors which work for your particular situation, but these I have read time and time again!
Get a group of the type you want to breed. I do 5-10% water changes everyday and mine just spawned again 2 days ago! I missed all but 2 eggs though, some serious egg eaters in this tank! My betta ate about 15 eggs in 3 seconds so I only got 2 from that clump.
In the last week I have seen the corys, the rasboras and the bristlenose catfish slow dancing to endless love... won't be long before I am off to the LFS with bags of fry. :dance
