Want to start a 55g planted.

I agree. Yes, CO2 is brilliant, but a minor myth has grown up that it's impossible to do a well planted tank without it. It's not; the continental Europeans have been doing tanks more for the plants than the fish for decades before anyone thought of injecting CO2.

<------Agrees with Karl :)

This is my 55, and I've never used CO2 or ferts

In a heavily planted tank you will need to add CO2. There's just no getting around it unless your raising algae. For 2.5 watts/gallon (moderate lighting) you "might" be able to get away with Flourish or fizz tabs. I don't have any experience with this, but I'm apprehensive that it would be successful. I have seen people do DIY CO2 on tanks this size, but it usually requires several reaction chambers in line. It would need to be monitored as fluctuations in CO2 do not have very good side effects. Try a search on "Tom Barr" or "Plantbrain". He has some suggestions on setting up a low cost pressurized CO2.

I respectfully beg to differ...

:D

I have plain, old gravel & a dbl striplight totally 64 watts :)

Ugh, researching this is so frustrating.

I have some people telling me to do 3 inches of eco complete, 3+ WPG and CO2 injection.

Then you come and show off your tank with gravel, 1 WPG, and no CO2. :mad2:

it all depends on how much lighting you want and what plants you wana grow. if you want 2 wpg then you wouldnt need co2 injection. its just you will be restricted to growing only low light plants

did you read up on the link i posted earlier?

I'm sorry :(

I'm NO expert on any of it, this is just what so far, is working for me
I just know that I wanted to keep things simple, & did.

I don't mean to be off-topic, but really no algae, Mokomon? Awesome. I must assume you definitely control the lighting time, feeding, weekly water changes, and the organic build-up in the filter. And for the ferts, you use regular flourish and excel?

I had a problem with BBA soon after the 3 day power outage we had, but nothing since

My lights are on from 9 am-12 am :lipssealedsmilie:, I feed twice daily, I only do water changes every 2-3 weeks, clean the filter once a month, and have NEVER used a fert of any kind.

I think I'm very, very, lucky :)
