Im quarantining a blue damsel and it has massive cyano growth in its tank. So I thought of a water bottle skimmer. Then I saw it completed on reefcentral and I decided to make one.

I used an ice mountain water bottle and punched holes about an inch below where the neck starts to taper. Then I cut off the bottom, cut a hole in the neck, and fed airline through the hole till the line was about 3/4 of an inch above the bottom. Then I drilld a 1in hole in an aquadine food container (big kind, the lfs has it in large tubes, kinda like bulk jellybeans) and pushed it onto the neck and glued it in place, drilled a hole at the bottom of the container and have airline draining the funk out. It is attached to the side of the tank by a suction cup and uses a red sea wooden airstone.

Well, I hate to say, it works. It works better than the backpak 2 reef I have on my 55.

Just thought I would share.

can you tanke some pics so i can get a good pic in my head how it will turn out?

Thanks

where did you find the exact plans for it?? that link only shows a pic.....this is very interesting!! do you get a good amount of skimmate with it?? i think ill try it!

I didn't get exact plans, saw threads on reefcentral and nano-reef.com for ideas and went from there.

In 12 hours I got about 2 oz. of foggy green skimmate, good for a water bottle!

sold!! i think ill give it a try!! would it work to use a hose coming out of the top instead of a collection cup, with the hose running down into the stand to collect in a bowl etc..?? kind of like this, but without the inlet pipes etc ????

AHHH!

try nano-reef then
Registration on rc is simple, activation takes about 5 days, but in the meanehule you can still view pics.

About the hose- I think it would work but the collection cup would be better, it will allow more foam to collapse and freely rise. I have a hose going into a two-liter coming from the collection cup.
