Hi Folks,

In the newbie forum I posted about a high ammonia problem that I'm having right now in my African Cichlid tank: http://www.aquariacentral.com/forums/showthread.php?t=68428

I'm going to go start on my water change now, but it was also suggested to lower my temp from 82 to around 75 to help neutralize some of the effects of the ammonia (or rather make it not as bad due to the lower temp).

Will this be OK for the cichlids? Our room temp is around 69 degrees right now, so I could see this happening overnight - would that be too much of a drop too soon?

Thanks

Make this change over several days and your fish will be just fine. Notice when your heater is on and move the dial just a little bit so that it turns off. This will drop the temperature a tiny bit. Keep doing this until you reach your desired temperature over 2-3 days and your fish will be happy

Temp really shouldn't be too much of an issue with ammonia, pH on the other hand can be. But if you have high ammonia then large water changes should be enough. Just keeping doign water changes until the ammonia level gets below 1ppm. the use of Prime water conditioner is also supposed to neutralize the toxic affects of ammonia while not starving the bacteria.
