Water Change Survey

1. How big is your tank?
I have some of all sizes, but the only one over 60 was just set up tonight.

2. How frequently do you do water changes?
Weekly.

3. How much water do you change?
Umm... roughly 20 to 25 % on the small ones, and probably a bit less on the 55.

4. At what NO3 level would you do water changes?
I don't check it, but I do sometimes throw in an extra change if it looks dirty or the fish look sad.

5 And how much?
Depends. Usually 2 gallons, since that's the size of my bucket.

I have three aquariums: 80g, 20g, 5g and I change the two bigger tanks once a week (50%) and the smaller one twice a week at 35% ...

sometimes I get lazy and push it a bit longer but terrible things always happen.

My nitrates will never tell me what level a tank is at. I am constantly fighting 0 nitrate and have to dose all 3 tanks daily or my plants suffer.

i added new fish 2 weeks ago and thier all still alive

The tolerance of some fish is surprising.

Its your tank, so do what works for you. Regular changes are part of the hobby in my world. When I was a kid growing up we never did water changes and twice a year drained all the tanks and disinfected everything in the mistaken notion that we were keeping the fish healthy. My parents had no notion of cycling and we lost lots of fish. But we just thought fish death was part of the hobby. Happens a lot less now that I understand the need for bacteria, and the regular water changes keep things well ballanced.

Im gonna restart the tank sometime next year then i will do it right. thanks for looking out for me and my fish :)

I've got a 5.5, a 2.5 (both planted betta tanks), a 20G long that holds 2 fire belly toads, 3 white clouds, snails, and plants (about 8 gallons of water), and a 55 planted. I do 50% at least once a week on my betta tanks (heated and filtered), 50% of my toad/white cloud tank (the toads are dirty), and about 30% at least once a week on my 55, sometimes a second smaller change in the middle of the week. I haven't tested my water but I am going to start when I start dosing ferts.
