Water Changes - Help Needed !

Hi Friends !

While doing a water change is it possible and ok to drain and fill the aquarium simultaneously ? I usually drain 50% Water and then refill it with fresh water but lately, its becoming a little difficult because I have a pile of rock reaching a little high and when I drain the water the exposed rocks etc get dried up... I also have to switch my filters off because the water output from them can easily push the rock pile...

I thought it would be great if I can drain and refill the water at the same time so that the water level is maintained and at the same time 50% water is changed...

Kindly give me your ideas and guide me on how do I do this... I mean how do I know when 50% water has been changed so that I can stop the draining and refilling...

this is the bad part,
I think you would also drain out some of the water that you just added to the tank

Maybe do a smaller w/c more often..
 
if you were to do both at the same time, you would rarely get 50% of the old water but a mix of new and old which would not be as affective as a true 50%. I would either just unplug the filters or if your doing your water change only once a week, do a 20% twice a week.
 
Agree with zig on this one. AFA the rock pile easily being pushed over, you need to fix it where this doesnt happen, its a danger to your fish as well as your tank if it falls, and if the filter pressure pushes it over, a fish can hit it and knock it over. AFA the roxks gettting dried out, leave your lights turned off while you change the water. It shouldnt be that big of a deal for them to lose moisture in the short amount of time between draining and filling. There is also the chance that you could drain the dechlor out if you fill and drain at the same time.

Overall, not a very good idea, but to make it work, two pythons with fill rate adjusted to be the same as drain rate would work, or one syphon hose and a python.

Thanks a lot for the kind replies and for guiding me... Actually my rock pile is'nt very unstable - I mean it isnt that the rocks would surely fall but I have a fear that the spray jets from my spray bars might topple them... I'm really not sure though...

Anyways, I was just afraid that the rocks would dry up and the bacteria living on them would die but I guess it would be a very small population of bacteria that gets exposed so I'd better do it the normal way... Thanks a lot for the help, Friends...

Kindly excuse me for being off-topic here - My friend gave me a few dead corals today. Can I keep them in my Frontosa-Brichardi Tank ? I mean apart from looking a little un-natural (which I dont really mind), are there any other dangers ?

The top of our DW is exposed when doing 40 to 50 percent wc's, i always turn off the filters during maintenence........:)

The dead coral could raise your ph. Boil it, scrub it, and put it in, if you dont mind your ph and hardness rasied..
