Water changes not lowering nitrites?

Anacharis is a nitrAte eater not nitrite. Nitrite is a byproduct of ammonia.

I'm not suggesting that anacharis is a nitrite eater...I'm wondering if the plant is consuming all the ammonia and nitrates at such a rate that nitrite-eaters are not being given a chance to form & consume the nitrites? Any way of removing the plants temporarily to see if it makes a difference?

I have a spare 5g tank in the closet ... but it seems hardly sufficient space for plants from a 45g tank and water circulation too. That is my only alternative plant housing, to my knowledge. Willing to be proven wrong though
