This is what I did before I invested in a Python. Pouring buckets does mess the aquascape up too much.

You can purchase stuff for a "DIY Python", but looking at some of the plans to build one, in the end it would cost you just as much as you can buy one for.
For example, I just purchased a 50' Python off petsmart.com for $45. For orders over $75 they had free shipping, so I combined it with a few other things I've been needing, and there you go.
So much easier to just buy it and not that much more expensive.
