I just started a new small 5gal freshwater tank... but i've been having issues figuring out what water to use for water changes. Some people say treat the tap water, some say use bottled water and/or treat that aswell, then there are still others saying use distilled or RO and add aquarium salts to it.

With so much info and little to base it on, what to you all think is best to use?

Tap water with water conditioners. like novaqua and amquel...or you can choose stresst coat, prime...I would go with nov and am

Yes

Plain old tap is fine - but test your tap supply for ammonia, nitrite, nitrates so you know what you need to use.

Seachem Prime is in my opinion absolutely the only thing you need to condition with, in that it takes of chlorine, chloramine, ammonia, heavy metals etc. etc. and also goes a lot further than a same sized bottle of most other stuff out there.

But then we're talking 5 gallon lol it would be a pain in the arse to measure out the ml for a mere 5 gallon using prime

Yeah kinda... Prime is heavy duty I'm tellin ya.

Nov and am is lighter. For a 5 gallon you should use like 5 or 6 drops of nov and am.

Using prime should usually only be used for bigger aquariums

Good point - probably have to use a pippette thing or something to measure the prime.

Don't add anything until you know the contents of your water. Distilled and RO water are not the best ideas for a FW tank as it is missing many trace elements found naturally in water. Use only if you have bad water.

You can use Purigen, Stress Coat, Easy Balance, if you so desire. Select one and stay with it. More than anything it is a personal choice.

For me, and only for me, it is a waste of money.I am on well water and use no chemicals at all. Nor do I use carbon.
