Hermit crabs eat algae yes..And i would have 10 or snails in there to keep on top of any ajgae that comes around as they will keep your live rock in check..

is it easier to take care of a hermit or a snail? how often do hermits need new shells? i saw this crab at the pet store a while ago i dont know what it was called, but maybe someone can help me. it has a real small body with long needle thin legs....

IMO snails are generally easier than hermits.

I would get a variety of snails and red reef or left handed hermits. You can usually buy shells at your lfs . The crabs get about an inch to an inch and a half wide.

I brought spare shells of eBay, dont know about you people over in the states, but UK based, there are quite a few people on eBay now who sell a selection of shells that are suitable for hermits to grow into...And really good priced aswell..
