water conditions... fish dyeing?

Something else that I was abit curious about....

As my nitrites lower the bubbles being made by my filter are less... before it looked like foam almost... now, there's only afew floating around which pop after awhile.... I was just curious if that is due to the lower nitrites..

Alright... well, I'm still struggling with my aqaurium... lost yet another fish 3 days ago.... and, I've been doing 60% water changes daily... today I decided to test my tap water because I thought maybe it might be the cause of everything... not likily now tho... lol...

Tap Water:

Nitrate- 0
Nitrite- 0
Ammonia- 0

I then tested my aqaurium water and got this:

Nitrate- 5
Nitrite- 0.1
Ammonia- 0

The fish are started to look more and more happy with each water change and as the nitrite levels go down!... I really do hope that after another 60% water change tomorrow the nitrite level will be at 0... and stays there!

Now, I'm starting to look into fish that I might want to add to my aqaurium... I really wanted Bolivian Rams... but, everywhere I call near me they don't have any... which is just very sad...

My aqaurium is a 70gallon... I've got two dwarf gouramis, four rasboras, one platie, three mollies, four zebra danios, and some type of bottom feeder... a corycat I think?

Anyways, what other cichlids beside Bolivian Rams would be ok to go with these fish in a nice community tank?... And how many would fit nicely in the tank?

Keyhole cichlids might work, I hear they are pretty peaceful... I think the majority of cichlids though get fairly large and somewhat aggressive, your smaller fish might be in trouble. I would definately hold off on adding anymore fish for at least a couple of weeks after you have stable test results. I still am a bit baffled that a weekend of overfeeding caused such extreme problems....

You've got lots of room in your tank, I would round out what you have before adding any different kinds of fish. For instance, I would go with 4-6 more rasboras, 4-6 more zebras, and at least 2-4 more corys (of the same kind) if that is indeed what you have. Since those are all schooling fish, the bigger the groups, the more likely they are to hang out together, which looks pretty cool. Maybe a couple more platys? I wish I had less species of fish, and just more of each, now that I am pretty much done stocking.

You had some pretty rough test results for a while there, it might have just been too much for the fish, which could be why another one died. It sucks, but I wouldn't worry about it too much...

Holly, How long after the nitrites and ammonia are at .o, will it take for bacteria to die of in the filter. How many days could a person go without adding fish?

Honestly, I'm not sure, but I wouldn't wait very long too find out ;)

Yeah, I don't plan on adding more fish for afew more weeks... and I'd like to get about 3-4 more danios...

Question... while I was rinsing out my sponge from the filter... I think the carbon bag ripped abit or something because it doesn't sink in the filter no more... so, I took it out and threw it in the garbage... and all that I have in my filter at the current moment is the sponge... and it's been this way for about a week now, and I totally forgot all about this until today.... lol.... anyways, my question is.... is it alright to just have the sponge in there, or should I buy another carbon bag?
